Hungarian American Coalition Announces Recipients of Bognár Family Hungarian Scholarships for 2016-2017

Washington, DC – Forty-one students have been awarded Bognár Family Hungarian Scholarships for the 2016-2017 academic year.

Five of the scholarship recipients are Hungarian students admitted to universities in the U.S.: Erzsi Boeke, The University of Tennessee at Martin, TN; Bálint Erkel and Attila Melegh, Syracuse University, NY; Lilla Székely, Lesley University, MA; and István Van Vianen, Yale University School of Architecture, CO.

Six scholarship recipients are enrolled in the following Hungarian universities: Annamária Király and Barbara Király, University of Debrecen; Dávid Bárdos, Orsolya Süli and Katalin Szócska, Semmelweis University, Budapest; and Edit Dukai, University of Pécs.

Five scholarship recipients are studying at colleges in the Subcarpathian region of Ukraine: Tamás Sándor Héder, Izabella Olcsvári and István Pataki, National University of Uzhhorod (Ungvár); Zsanett Tóth and Hajnalka Vaskeba, Transcarpathian Hungarian College, Berehove (Beregszász).

Twenty-three scholarships were awarded to Hungarian students admitted to universities in the Transylvania region of Romania: Richárd Bálint, Irma Tímea Császár, Norbert Loránd Kovács, Emőke Meleg, Klára Krisztina Simon, Kálmán Takács and Ákos Vladár, Babeș-Bolyai University, Cluj Napoca (Kolozsvár); András Szabolcs Barabási, Andrea Izsák, Krisztina Kapás, Orsolya Kapás, Csenge Kovács, Katalin Kövecsi and Norbert László, Sapientia Hungarian University of Transylvania, Cluj Napoca (Kolozsvár); Antal Balla, Örs Birton, Mildred Beatrix Izsák, Noémi Izsák, Imola Kapás and László Szabó, University of Medicine and Pharmacy, Târgu Mureș (Marosvásárhely); Csenge Simon, Gheorghe Dima Music Academy, Cluj Napoca (Kolozsvár); Béla Olasz, Alba Iulia Roman Catholic Theological College and Seminary, Alba Iulia (Gyulafehérvár); and Tímea Papdán, Faculty of Medicine and Pharmacy, University of Oradea (Nagyvárad).

Laura Paracki won a scholarship to support her studies in primary education at the University of Novi Sad, Subotica (Szabadka), in the Vojvodina region of Serbia.

Finally, Sára Benkő, who studies at University of Leuven, Belgium, was also awarded a scholarship.

The Hungarian Scholarship Fund (HSF) was established in 1999 by Dr. Béla and April Bognár to provide assistance to qualified Hungarian university students in Hungary, Romania, Ukraine, Slovakia, Serbia, and the United States.  Since its inception, the founders have raised more than $500,000 from members of the Hungarian American community, churches, organizations, and the Sunshine Lady Foundation (SLF), directed by Mrs. Doris Buffett.

Scholarship recipients must have an excellent academic record, outstanding recommendations from teachers, mentors, clergy or community leaders, and proven financial need.
