Eva Konkoly, Director, Ambassadors of the Future Board, Eva E. Voisin, Esq. Honorary Consul and Board Member of the Hungarian American Coalition and Adam Beres, President, Ambassadors of the Future at the Bognar Family Scholarship presentation at the Ambassadors of the Future Gala on December 15, 2018
The Hungarian Scholarship Fund (HSF) was established in 1999 by Dr. Béla and April Bognár to help outstanding Hungarian students finish their educations in their own countries or in the United States, and to remain or return to their home countries to provide leadership in their communities. In 2014, the Bognár family approached the Hungarian American Coalition (Coalition) with the request to rename the fund and take over administrative duties for the program, including fundraising, selecting scholarship recipients and program evaluation. Sadly, Dr. Béla Bognár recently passed away. To learn more about his life and work, access his obituary here. The Coalition will continue to administer the scholarship program in the spirit of Dr. Bognár’s legacy.
Since its inception, the scholarship fund has awarded more than $700,000 to 255 Hungarian students in the US and the Carpathian Basin raised from members of the Hungarian American community; churches; organizations; the Sunshine Lady Foundation (SLF), directed by Mrs. Doris Buffett; and recently, by the Ambassadors of the Future. Scholarship recipients must have an excellent academic record, outstanding recommendations from teachers, mentors, clergy or community leaders, and a proven financial need. The Ambassadors of the Future is a registered charitable organization that was formed in 2017 by Adam Beres, along with his parents, Zsuzsa Pekarovics, MD, and Attila Beres, Ph.D., and many other community members in Los Angeles, CA. The organization encourages young people to participate in philanthropic activities, to foster international student exchanges and to help disadvantaged children coping with diabetes and obesity. At their second fundraising event last year, the Foundation awarded $25,000 to USC‘s Dornsife College of the Arts and Letters, encouraging five international students to continue their studies and raised $10,000 in support of BFHSF.
