Hungarian American Coalition Receives $350,000 Grant from the Kilroy Foundation for Farmos School and Parajd Recovery

Washington, DC – The Hungarian American Coalition (Coalition) received a $350,000 grant from the Kilroy Foundation to advance educational infrastructure in Farmos, Hungary, and community recovery in Parajd (Praid), Romania.

The grant includes $300,000 to the “Egy Falu az Iskoláért” Foundation for upgrades to the Miklós Matolcsy Elementary School in Farmos, and $50,000 for flood-impacted salt mine relief in Parajd, Romania

This grant represents the second time the Foundation has supported the Farmos elementary school, following a $200,000 grant in 2025.

The current allocation will fund the second phase of the school rehabilitation, which includes facade renovation with plaster repairs, insulation, window/door repairs, and painting; roof replacement including tiles, framing, and gutters; classroom wall bases with new materials, painting, and guards; attic/slab insulation; plus built-in cabinets and child-safe storage.

Additional grant, in the amount of $50,000, will help fund community initiatives in Parajd, Romania. In May of last year, an unexpected and catastrophic flood forced the immediate closure of the Parajd Salt Mine—a historic institution that has provided livelihoods, stability, and identity for generations. The mine was not only a major employer but also a cornerstone of the local tourism economy, attracting hundreds of thousands of visitors annually for its therapeutic microclimate and unique underground attractions.

As a result, the regional economy is facing a severe crisis. The grant will provide emergency aid to households/small businesses and will support recovery efforts, including temporary jobs, skills training, and diversification in the tourism industry.
