In the October 26 issue of The Washington Post, a quote from the Associated Press, under the heading: "Cultural historian and author Jacques Barzun dies at 104" "The outbreak of war in August 1914 and the nightmare that ensued put an end to all innocent joys and assumptions" Dr Barzun wrote "By the age of 10 – as I was later told – my words and attitudes betrayed suicidal thoughts; it appeared that I was 'ashamed' to be alive".
